An initiative for Europe’s cities

Intercultural exchange between major European cities has been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. And now the Vienna Tourist Board wants to send out a signal by lending its support to other cities in Europe, together with official partners Austrian Airlines and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The unusual initiative will turn residents of Vienna into tourists for other European cities. After all, solidarity between Europeans needs to extend beyond national borders, especially in times like these.

In May and June 2022, we will send one resident of Vienna to a city in Europe for every 100 people who come to the Austrian capital. Barcelona, Berlin, London, Milan, Paris, Zurich and lots of other major cities are on the list of destinations for more than 2,000 Viennese to visit. At its heart, the campaign is all about promoting intercultural exchange as well as celebrating and revitalizing city tourism.

Backing from Barcelona, Berlin, London, Milan and Paris

Launched by Vienna, several major European cities have signed up to the initiative. In light of the difficult situation currently facing city tourism, there is a strong desire among major destinations to join forces and support one another.

The tourist boards will come together to make a joint declaration of support for the United Cities of Tourism initiative on Instagram on May 15. Rather than promoting their own cities, on this day Barcelona, Berlin, London, Milan and Paris will each put another city center stage.

Strong partners:

Our special thanks go to our partners Austrian Airlines and ÖBB. They play a key role in connecting the participating cities and will provide a total of 2,162 tickets for residents of Vienna – enabling the international exchange that lies at the heart of the project and bringing the initiative to life.

F.A.Q.

How is the number of arrivals in Vienna measured?

The Vienna Tourist Board has developed a model based on real-time booking data, the number of arrivals in 2019 and other factors in order to forecast booking rates during the initiative (between May 1 and June 30, 2022). This figure will form the basis for the exchange of guests during this busy period for city tourism.

Which residents of Vienna will have the chance to travel?

All residents of the city can register online for the opportunity to act as ambassadors for the initiative. Depending on the number of arrivals in the capital in a given week, every Monday the lucky winners will receive details of the destination for their city break.

Which cities will Viennese residents visit?

The campaign for the initiative will be executed in six of the Vienna Tourist Board’s key European markets. Vienna residents will have the chance to win a flight or rail ticket to one of the following cities: Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Cologne, Florence, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hamburg, London, Lyon, Manchester, Milan, Munich, Nice, Paris, Rome or Zurich.

Who will provide the tickets?

Our partners: depending on the destination, Viennese residents will travel across Europe with either Austrian National Railways or Austrian Airlines.
